A gathering of the family’s to preserve family history
By Donald N. Conoly
The spelling on the name has had many variants Conally, Conley, Conoly, Conoley, Connelly, Connolly etc. The Conoly, Conoley, etc. family has been gathering each year for the past fifty two years. The idea of a clan gathering was started by the late John Duncan McMillan a business owner of Raeford. They are descendants of a Scotsman Daniel Conley and Nancy Campbell.
Daniel Conley (1768-1849) and wife, Nancy Campbell (1770-1851) were natives of Scotland, where they were born, reared and married on 23 June 1792 at Bowmore Parish (now Kilarrow), on the Isle of Islay. A few days after the marriage they left their native country for the United States, settling in the Cape Fear River basin of Robeson Co., NC with a Scotch colony, with which he came to this country, and spent the rest of their lives in Robeson County. He was an educated farmer and landowner in the Lumber Bridge/Shannon area. Their family consisted of six sons and four daughters. Elements of the family moved to lower Georgia, Alabama, and Texas. Some of the descendants became quite prominent.
The clan gathering draws family from afar. Family members from South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, Texas, California, Kentucky, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and South Dakota have attended in the past. Are you family or friend? If you think you might be a descendant of Daniel Conley and Nancy Campbell you are welcome to attend the gathering. Some family names include: Blue, Brown, Caldwell, Carlisle, Cobb, Conoley, Conoly, Currie, Elliott, Fiveash, Galbreath, Hodgin, Holland, Humphrey, Johnson, Jones, Laughlin, Livingston, Mathews, McBryde, McDonald, McDougald, McEachern, McIntyre, McLauchlin, McLean, McMillan, McNeill, McPhail, McPhaul, Melvin, Moffitt, Monroe, Nye, Parker, Patterson, Prevatte, Scott, Sinclair, Stiles, Sumner, Thompson, Wallace, Williams, Wood and over 1200 other surnames.
This year the 52nd gathering will be held during the North Carolina Turkey Festival in Raeford, NC. The Festival includes food, crafts, bands, parades, and other events, as there is much to see and be a part of. Visit the website for more information on the events at http://www.ncturkeyfestival.org. On Saturday September 15, 2012 a cook out will be held at the Raeford-Hoke Museum 5:00-7:00 pm. The supper will be $10.00 a person to help offset expenses. Touring the Museum is Free, thanks to our cousin Joyce Monroe. On Sunday September 16, 2012 at Antioch Presbyterian Church services will be followed by a meeting and covered dish lunch provided by attendees. Donations are needed to keep the tradition going.
On the Saturday, September 15, 2012, from 1pm-4pm before the cook out, Don Conoly, the family historian will be taking those interested on a tour of the area. We will meet on the Court House steps on Main Street at 1pm. Then we will go to old home sites, gravesites, and discuss the history of the families and the area. It will be a transition back in time, bring your camera to take back memories. He has written two books on the family history during over forty years of research. Ask him about them.

Hello,

Announcing the 50th annual Conoly/Conoley and descendants family reunion. This year the reunion will be held on Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th of September 2010 in Raeford, North Carolina. This is the area that our ancestors, Daniel Conley and Nancy Campbell settled when they married and came from Scotland to America in the 1790’s. Details are still being planned but the dates have been set. One of the things that I plan to do is take those interested on a trip back in time to old home places, cemeteries, and places of interest of our ancestors. That trip will take place on Saturday and I will talk about the people and events in their life that I have learned after 40 years of research on our ancestors. It has been a great interest of those who don’t live in the area and want to know more about our ancestors and I invite you to come along. Tell others about the reunion and make your plans to attend now. I will send out another message when more details are available. If you have a particular interest let me know.

Scottish Tartans Museum, Franklin, NC

Nestled in the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina there’s a Scottish Tartans Museum and Gift shop that just landed on my wish list of places to visit. The museum, located in Franklin, NC, about 65 miles southwest of Asheville, serves as a showcase for tartan dress and is a "general Scottish Heritage Center for the region". Their website provides a tartan search, gifts, Scottish Clan and history information, articles on Scottish dress, and more.

There’s a small entrance fee ($2.00 at the time of this posting) and their hours of operation (Monday through Saturday) are noted on their website.

For a quick preview, UNC-TV has a small video clip online that provides a look inside the museum. This video clip is several minutes long and the Scottish Tartans Museum section doesn’t start until almost six minutes into the video. You can use the slider bar beneath the video to move through the video a little faster. (The first six minute section is about an Orchid Conservatory in Belmont, NC, and is great to watch, too, if you love orchids or flowers in general.) http://flash.unctv.org/ncweekend/ncw_061208.html

Consider a trip to the Tartans Museum or just check it out online at http://www.scottishtartans.org/index.html. They also have an online gift shop that might give you some ideas for gifts for your Scottish relatives and friends!
